About
Devgeeks started out as a catch-all for a group of developer friends intent on taking on the Australian web development market in early 2000; a cadre spear-headed by Carlos “Tommy” Williams.
Tommy emigrated from the USA to Australia in 1985. His mother wanted him to be a computer programmer, but he would have none of it as he was clearly meant to be a rock star. In 1997 Tommy accepted a position as a programmer in the Web Development Unit at The University of QLD. Since then Tommy has worked for a Boston internet-boom start-up, returned to the University of QLD as the webmaster for the School of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering, then walked away from the World Wide Web for a time developing software for the mail house HPA.
In late 2007 he came to his senses, moved to Melbourne and joined a web consulting company called Hugeobject that were working on what would become the “software as a service” online event registrations company Eventarc.
During the last few years devgeeks has been the umbrella for Tommy’s open source and pro-bono application development (such as the 4ZzZfm community radio iPhone app) under devgeeks.org. Now, four years later and nearly 12 since first attempting to strike out on his own under the moniker, he is now finally making something of the devgeeks name.
Tommy is the always surprised and amazed father of Bram and Ivy, and grateful husband of Leonie. He is also in a few punk/hardcore bands and has played shows with most of the best bands in the genre. He still totally reckons the rock star thing isn’t off the table.
